Leviticus 4-7: Holy Worship Part 2
I. Introduction
II. Sin Offering
The Holy God who is All-Forgiving
Leviticus 4:27-35 - Sin Unintentionally - sin by straying or by accident.
"He shall bring for his offering a goat (or lamb), a female without blemish, for his sin which he has committed. And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill the sin offering in the place of burnt offering. And the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out all the rest of its blood at the base of the altar. And all its fat he shall remove, as the fat is removed from the peace offerings, and the priest shall burn it on the altar for a pleasing aroma to the LORD."
Eg. We may slip the bank's pen into our pocket unintentionally. We may say it is not a sin. Then why did we feel guilty when we saw the pen? Of course, we can solve this by bringing the pen back to the bank. Or we could accidentally kill someone while driving, even it it was his fault.
Lists of people who sin unintentionally:
a) Priests - 4:2-12
b) Community - 4:13-21
c) Leader - 4:22-26
d) Member in Faith Community - 4:27-35
List of Sins:
a) Touching unclean things - 5:2
b) Touching human uncleanness - 5:3
c) Utters a rash oath to do evil - 5:4
Application of Sin Offering:
a) Keep Short Account with God.
Symbolize the transfer of sin to the animal. Sin contaminates us and the entire community, even if it was done unintentionally. It will kill our destiny and our life. Gal 5:19-20 - lists of the sin of flesh. These are the sins that our enemy will use against us. We should regularly confess our sins, so that it doesn't contaminate our soul and kill our destiny and our lives. The longer we keep these sins, the more the scars of the sin will to grow in our souls and hinder our relationship with God.
Gravity of sin, even unintentional, in our life:
"Sin will take you farther than you ever intended to go, it will cost you more than you ever expected to pay, and it will keep you longer than you ever intended to stay." Teg Haggard
b) Repent for the Forgiveness of God
Repentance is a process of reviewing one's actions and feeling contrition or regret for past wrongs, which is accompanied by commitment to and actual actions that show and prove a change for the better. It is a change of mind and heart that gives us a fresh view about God, about ourselves, and about the world. It includes turning away from sin and turning to God for forgiveness. Repentance is motivated by love for God and the sincere desire to obey His commandments.
Lev 5:7, 10b - if he cannot afford a lamb, he shall bring two turtledoves or two pigeons. The sin offering serves as a reminder of God's holiness. If they cannot afford the birds, he can bring a tenth of an ephah of the finest flour for sin offering. (Lev 5:11.)
All that is requires is the sinner's genuine repentance. It is not about the offering we bring, for God look at the heart for a genuine repentance. This is the grace of God. We just need to come to God, broken and seeking help.
"When we confess our sins, God casts them into the deepest ocean, gone forever. Then God places a sign out there that says "No Fishing Allowed." - Corrie ten Boom
1 John 1:9 - He is just and will forgive us our sins.
III. The Guilt Offering (Lev 5:14-6:7, 7:1-10)
The God who is All Restoring
Lev 6:1-7
"If he has sinned and has realized his guilt and will restore what he took by robbery or what he got by oppression or the deposit that was committed to him or the lost thing that he found or anything about which he has sworn falsely, he shall restore it in full and shall add a fifth to it, and give it to him to whom it belongs on the day he realizes his guilt. And he shall bring to the priest as his compensation to the LORD a ram without blemish out of the flock, or its equivalent, for a guilt offering."
The guilt offering is to make amends to the wrong committed to God and the victims. A breach of faith or trust. He must make restitution to the victim and sacrifice to God. He must return what he has taken plus 20% more. Restitution is to make right what was wrong, to repair what was lost to someone.
In an accident, you need to bear the damage but also the hospital bill and consultation, if needed. The procedure of Guilt offering are so detailed in order for God to restore you.
Luke 19:8 - Zacchaeus returned four fold to whom he has overcharge. This is restoration or compensation.
The Guilt offering looks forward to Jesus Christ's sacrifice to restore or restitute us to God. The blood of Jesus bring to us true forgiveness of our sins.
Heb 10:22 - draw near to God with a sincere heart with full assurance that faith brings. Our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience.
We need to examine if we had wrong someone or taken something that was not ours, and we need to apologize and make things right through restitution.
